About Degas House
Explore the home and workplace of French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas, who lived in New Orleans during his five-month sojourn from France. You’ll be taken on a guided tour around the house to see the works of art he created during his time there, and you’ll learn all about his life. Your host might even be one of Degas’ great-grandnieces who manage the historic site, so don’t forget to take along your burning questions.

Edgar Degas was a French artist who was regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism. Following his service in the Franco-Prussian War in 1872, Degas began an extended stay in New Orleans, where his brother RenĂ© and a number of other relatives lived. Staying at the home of his Creole uncle, Michel Musson, Degas produced a number of works, many depicting family members. One of Degas’s New Orleans works A Cotton Office in New Orleans, garnered favorable attention back in France and was his only work purchased by a museum (the Pau) during his lifetime.

- Edgar Degas’ sojourn from France was, notably, the only US journey made by any French painter of the Impressionist period.
- Degas’s mother was a Creole from New Orleans, and Degas House was the home of his mother’s brother. It was here that Degas stayed in 1872 following his service in the Franco-Prussian War.
- The Degas House is listed in both the French National Order of Arts and Letters and the United States National Register of Historic Places.
