About Monterey Bay Aquarium
Located on Monterey Bay, Monterey Bay Aquarium is a nonprofit public aquarium. The aquarium focuses on the habitats of Monterey Bay. It was one of the first institutions to exhibit a living kelp forest. Its biologists have pioneered the animal husbandry of jellyfish and, as of 2016, it remains the only public aquarium to have successfully exhibited a great white shark for longer than 16 days. The aquarium’s seafood consumer awareness program, Seafood Watch, has had an influential role among consumers and businesses in enhancing sustainable fishing practices.

Ocean conservation has a long history on the shores of Monterey Bay, whose rich ecosystem, abundant wildlife and deep submarine canyon have inspired writers, scientists and conservation leaders. We’re leveraging our unique window on the ocean and the high level of trust we enjoy among Californians to inspire action to restore and protect California’s invaluable ocean resources and ecosystems.
Sea otters, sharks and bluefin tuna are among the most beloved and awe-inspiring species in our exhibits. They are also among the most vulnerable—and we’re committed to help ensure their long-term survival. Our current focus is on the population biology and ecology of these species, whose health is vital to ocean ecosystems in the California Current and across the Pacific Ocean. Flashy fishes. Colorful crustaceans. Riveting reptiles. Meet them all in our new special exhibition, ¡Viva Baja! Life on the Edge, featuring animals from Baja’s deserts, mangrove forests and coral reefs.
