More Information on Harper Fowlkes House

The Harper Fowlkes House overlooks beautiful Orleans Square in downtown Savannah. The house is topped with a distinctive mansard roof, and features an elegant central hall with six spectacular chandeliers. The interior, with both the architecture and the collections, will impress as much as the stately exterior.

The story of the original family, as well as the last resident of the house, Alida Harper, will fascinate you. Alida’s collection of family furniture and antebellum antiques give guests the feeling that they have stepped back in time. She lived in the house for 45 years. As an antique dealer, she lovingly filled the house with period pieces and collectibles that remain today. She was an entrepreneur and a preservationist before her time.

The life of Alida Harper is a journey to be remembered. A pioneer in the restoration movement, Alida grew to become one of the most successful Savannah women in the 20th century. Landscape architect, John McEllen, designed the courtyard garden featuring a red maple grown from seed from George Washington’s Virginia estate! This grand southern home was left to the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia. The Society of the Cincinnati serves as a patriotic organization founded by George Washington’s officers in 1783.
