The History of the Troubles walking tour of Belfast

Between 1971 and 1998, Belfast City Centre was the setting for many tragic incidents of “the Troubles”. This unique walking tour of the City Centre with an expert local guide visits the actual sites of some of the most significant events. In the course of the tour, you’ll learn how the Troubles began, the stories of the people involved, their place in the conflict, and the effect these attacks and incidents had on the city and its people. It will also show you how far the city has come since the ceasefires and the Peace Process.

The tour will allow you to get a real feel for the history of the city, as it offers total locational authenticity; you’ll be brought to the sites of many of the most significant incidents in the history of the Troubles, such as Bloody Friday, when 23 car bombs were driven into the city, resulting in a huge loss of life. This period of history can appear confusing to visitors, and you may have many questions; your guide, who was born in the city in the years the Troubles began, will be capable of answering each one while also weaving their own stories and memories into their tour!

You’ll learn about Belfast’s history and heritage. Everyone has heard of the Titanic and the Troubles, and during this tour, you’ll dive deeper into the topics, but remember, there’s so much more to discover! Belfast first got its name over 1,300 years ago; you’ll get to know more about historic buildings and landmarks such as St. Anne’s Cathedral, Kelly’s Cellars, the Albert Clock, the Beacon of Hope, and the Salmon of Knowledge. You’ll hear local legends and contemporary social history, and you’ll understand why Belfast is still such a unique city today.

The tour will also take you through the cultural hub of the Cathedral Quarter. You’ll stroll beside the waterfront with views of the river Lagan and over to the iconic yellow cranes, Samson and Goliath, in the Harland and Wolff shipyard, where the Titanic was built over 100 years ago. Then, you’ll explore the historic Entries at the heart of the city center and see how they have now been turned into an outdoor art gallery. At the end, you’ll finish the tour at the Titanic Memorial back at City Hall. If you like walking and history, this is the tour for you.
