More Information on Lone Star Flight Museum

The Lone Star Flight Museum (LSFM) opened to the public in November 1990 at Scholes Field in Galveston, Texas, as a dream come true for its founder, Robert Waltrip. His expansive collection of aircraft created an amazing museum experience, and in 1999, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame was added to the museum. In 2017, the museum relocated to Houston at Ellington Airport. LSFM’s move from Galveston was much more than a location change. It marked the transformation into a flight museum experience designed to inspire and educate future generations, honor those who flew in the past and commemorate the rich history of Texas aviation, highlighting its impact on the state, the nation, and the world.

The Lone Star Flight Museum shares the storied history of flight and its place in the continuing Texas and American journey. The daring exploits of aviation pioneers combined with hands-on interactive displays detailing the evolution of technology in the exhibits. These features and airworthy aircraft in the hangars bring the wonder of flight to life. LSFM is the only museum in the Greater Houston area that combines science, history, and live flight into one amazing experience, and it’s the only museum whose exhibit flies!

The museum education programs are STEM-based interactive opportunities focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) along with formal and informal programming.  This combination of activities creates a learning experience for students of all ages. Both online and in-museum offerings are uniformly aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards as appropriate, and all programs are designed to be easily customizable for students K-12. The Lone Star Flight Museum is recognized as one of the top flying museums in the United States and continues to provide an intriguing and entertaining museum visit for everyone!

Milestones and Moments: The Aviation Art of Douglas Ettridge

Now on display at LSFM is the private collection of the late Durrell U. “Dee” Howard (1920 – 2009). For Douglas Ettridge, the painting was a way of expressing the excitement he felt for the people and machines that defy the pull of gravity and leave the earth behind. Whether it was balloons, airplanes, or rockets, he felt compelled to tell their stories from his viewpoint using paint on canvas. Along the way, he captured the spirit that inspires all who look to the sky and yearn to fly.

The thrill of triumph, the pain of tragedy, or the trepidation of take-off into the unknown are all given life through Ettridge’s creations. Bringing the most important milestones and the simplest moments in aviation to life, he was a master storyteller who shared the excitement of humanity’s dream to fly. In Milestones and Moments, Ettridge’s paintings are complimented with historical documentation to help us better understand the people, places, and planes that inspired his art. This exhibit is included in your general admission and free for members.
