To Space and Back
Space exploration is having a big impact on your life. Not only is it helping discover a universe of unimaginable scale and beauty, but it’s also reaching back down into our world and influencing the way we live.
Wright Propeller
The Wright propeller was owned by a worker from the Wright Aeroplane Company who received it when the Company closed. According to oral history, just prior to closing the doors for the final time, Orville Wright granted permission for loyal employees to take pieces of flyers with them on their last day(s) to thank them and to tidy the building up prior to vacating. In 1944, the sons of the worker who was given the prop took it to Hawthorne Hill to show Orville. The surviving Wright Brother welcomed them and signed the prop and the owners went on their way.
Titan Missile Program
The Titan Missile program operated between 1958 until 2005 and included many separate parts and stages. The Titan missile program was particularly based in Colorado, having a production facility in Lakewood. The museum displays three main Titan assemblies; two Titan Stage 1 engines, one Titan Stage 2 engine, and the interstage ‘skirt’. There were 368 launches of the Titan, 322 of which were successful.
