About Christ Church Burial Ground
Take a self-guided tour around this 300-year-old, two-acre burial ground, and visit the final resting place of several key players in America’s early history. Four of the signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried here, along with Benjamin Franklin and his wife and several other Colonial and Revolution-Era figures. The burial ground contains 1,400 markers, but over 2,500 more have disappeared due to erosion.

It’s an old Philadelphia tradition to throw a penny onto Benjamin Franklin’s grave for good luck, to honor the coining of his phrase ‘a penny saved, is a penny earned’, so you’ll find his grave under hundreds of copper coins.

- Francis Hopkinson – 1737-1790 – signer of the Declaration of Independence, artist, lawyer, judge, composer.
- Joseph Hewes – 1730-1779 – signer of the Declaration of Independence and Secretary of Naval Affairs.
- George Ross – 1730-1779 – signer of the Declaration of Independence and judge.
- Dr. Benjamin Rush – 1746-1813 – physician, social reformer, Treasurer of the United States Mint, signer of the Declaration of Independence, founder of Dickinson College, and “The Father of American Psychiatry.”
